Guiseley Girls Under 9s attended the WRCFA Olympic Torch Event at Potternewton playing fields on Sunday 24th June. After concerns about the weather proved unfounded, 9 of the squad of 14 were able to play in the 7-a-side event, against Carlton Athletic Giants, Norristhorpe Bees and Goole Town Girls.
The girls displayed huge commitment, and no little skill to finish the tournament as runners up with a record of won 1, drawn 1, lost 1, an especially impressive performance as two of the teams they played were Under 10 squads. Francesca finished with 4 goals against Carlton Athletic Giants, taking her tally to 10 in 5 games, and Amelia scored her 18th of the season against Norristhorpe Bees. Hannah, Charlotte, Sadie and Georgia were typically tenacious in midfield, and the continued improvement in their passing and movement showed real progress. Olivia was as reliable and disciplined as ever at the back, despite missing her usual defensive partner as Louise dropped into defence for the first time, and put in a great performance. Lucy showed her skill and confidence in goal particularly with a fine double save against Carlton Athletic Giants .
The team (and parents and coaches!) then took the opportunity to take part in some of the skills challenges around the site.
Once the participants medals had been awarded, the team stayed together to watch the Olympic Torch Relay pass. Despite a long wait after the tournament ended, the team never left their vantage point and made the most of a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.
Aside from the usual wholehearted performance from the girls, all of the coaching team were especially proud of the squad for the manner in which they conducted themselves both on and off the pitch.
