Burley Rovers were our hosts this week which saw us play in a seven a side system for the first time this season. We had some good matches against Burley last year, one of which was on a very wet and cold Sunday morning which I am sure anyone who was there will still remember!! Today, I am pleased to say was nothing like that!!
Anyway, today’s game saw the teams match up 7 v 7 on a wide and flat pitch, (with cut grass), which was very much suited to the way our boys like to play. The game started a little quick for us and Burley duly took advantage; but from that moment on the team played as well as I have ever seen them. All seven players were using their space well, passing neatly and were well organised in their formation. These factors enabled us to attack with flair and finish unerring accuracy.
Burley posed most threat on the break and built some really strong attacks that our boys had to be on the top of their games to prevent turning into goals. Jo, our Goal Keeper today, helped prevent several goal scoring opportunities by his quick thinking and closing down of the Burley attackers. Jo was also responsible for helping us build our own attack by passing the ball out quickly to the feet to our defenders.
Our defence today was managed by Harry and Louis. Both played with great composure as they controlled passes and used the space around them to good effect instilling confidence from the rest of the team. The coaches have been impressed by the way they have been working together and the speed in which they have reacted to clearing their lines.
Our Captain today was Jozef who worked tirelessly for the team controlling the middle of the pitch. Some neat passing and close control stood out in his performance, along with his good attacking play.
Jozef was supported on the left and right side of midfield by Eddie and Billy. Both players provided good attacking options as most of our play went through them. They both provided their team with crosses and shots which kept Burley on the back foot. The neat interplay between our midfield and attack today was fantastic and really shows how we have developed over the past year.
Lastly, heading up our attacking line was Ewan, our man in the right place at the right time!! Forever a thorn in the side of the Burley defenders Ewan kept them busy all game with his runs into space and movement in the penalty area. Ewans role has proved very successful in freeing up space for our attacking midfielders to get forward into goal scoring positions, well done.
Well, its’ another Sunday coming to a close. Thanks to the boys for giving all the coaches such a good performance and we look forward to entertaining Horsforth at home next week.
