What a great start to the season.
The boys began really well and kept up the standards for the full 40 mins. I was really pleased to see them put into practice what we’ve been working so hard on in training over the past few weeks. The concentration levels and positional sense was spot on – I have to say, even better than I’d hoped for in the first game of the season.
Though he wasn’t called on too often, I thought Harvey played really well in goals – he read the game excellently and came off his line on a couple of occasions to thwart Thackley’s strikers.
We had plenty of the usual barnstorming runs from Niall and Charlie, who continue to forge a really intelligent partnership – scoring some proper football goals from Niall’s speedy wing play crossing from the left with Charlie charging up in support. Lennon again showed a great eye for goal and gives us that extra scoring dimension we were perhaps missing towards the end of last season.
Ollie was very consistent in defence today, his positional play is improving week by week. He also made a few awesome, defence splitting passes, which was very pleasing to see!
Good also to see Joe get some reward this week – he takes on board advice so well, he’s a pleasure to coach – he even had a bit of a Frank Worthington moment today, as ball he flicked over the defenders head before spinning around him for a shot!
Daniel again showed a great football intelligence, he reads the game very well and, for me, is a stand out in this area. He has the potential to make an excellent centre half as he grows into his game.
Well done lads, we are very proud of you all today.
Thanks to Jim (very organised number 2!!), Darren (great referee) and all the parents for pitching in with the goals and for creating a great atmosphere.
Thanks also to Thackley Lightening who battled away right until the end and were a credit to their club. We look forward to the return match when Matt will have had more training and match time with his boys.
