The girls played their first away friendly of the season last Saturday at Tingley Athletic who themselves have just put together a 7/8s side. We were all made to feel very welcome and thanks to manager Vince for an enjoyable morning. Both sides had just the minimum 5 players present and unfortunately for Tingley it was our strongest & most experienced members that arrived in rainy South Leeds.
Our girls are still at an age where we shouldn’t publish scores but its hard to hide the fact that we went from 0-10 up at half time to finishing approx 3-15 winners! Our clean sheet at the break was down to Elizabeth’s superb defensive display hoovering up everything at the back plus finding the time to score a couple herself! A very disciplined performance and a joy to watch. All the girls passed the ball about throughout the game and played with football intelligence beyond their years, (i think the numerous Sunday mornings of training are really paying off!!) Other highlights for me were Silvie chipping the keeper, Mia’s superb defense splitting pass to Reya who controlled skillfully on the run coolly finishing under pressure, Mia playing a half in goal without a tantrum(!) and bowling the ball out to defense so that we could play up from the back instead of her usual hoof upfield (just like watching Brazil??!) And… Tingley girl Tilly’s thunderous long range crashing effort against our crossbar.
Hopefully we can arrange another game with Tingley soon involving our newer and younger players which would benefit both clubs with regards to player experience and being a much more even contest.
Today, and our recent game against our U9s has shown us that we should be well equipped as a squad next season to play regular matches against other clubs in a more competitive environment and possibly in league format….. news on this to follow!
Girl of the game……Elizabeth!
