Thackley Lightning 2-7 Guiseley Yellows U9

The build up to our very first “competitive” game in the Keybury League had been positive, having played a good number of friendlies in late August/early September of which we remained undefeated and racked up 36 goals in 5 games, but it also gave us a chance to see some of the boys in different positions.

We knew that our first league fixture was going to be tough, especially given that it was away on a big pitch at Thackley.

For the first 5-10 minutes I think it’s fair to say both sides were a little wary of each other and it took us around the half way mark in the first half to get our passing game going and using the full width of the pitch, which resulted in us peppering the Thackley goal with a string of corners and some good play on both flanks by Oliver & Niall. In a matter of a couple of minutes we were two goals up with a couple of good close range finishes from Charlie, which saw us into halftime.

The start of the second half saw the home side pull a goal back, and we really had to soak up a bit of pressure for a good five minutes, but credit to Josh, James & Will who never flinched and continued to get the ball out wide, where we were always dangerous on the counter, and so it proved, a good run and fierce shot into the corner from Taylor settled us down, and from then on we passed the ball about like we showed we can in pre season, which was really pleasing to see. Charlie quickly completed his hat trick & got a fourth shortly after (thought I heard a shout from the crowd that he was just like Lineker!) with Taylor getting a second and Oliver completing a fine victory, with the home side getting a late consolation.

The only player I haven’t mentioned was Jaiden, who was exceptional, I think he covered every blade of grass, he didn’t lose a tackle, and a real midfield dynamo performance. The parents obviously thought the same as us, with a near clear sweep of the Man of the Match votes! A big well done to him, and all the boys for a big team performance, against strong opposition.

Next up Guiseley Blues at Home !
