GG U12’s Blues
Garforth 1 Guiseley 3
A fantastic game of football ended with Guiseley sneaking a deserved win against a very determined Garforth side with three goals in the last 7 minutes. The hardest, most nerve-wracking game of the season!
With the legendary Chris Ackerman absent from his usual touchline spot, it was 15 minutes before a replacement was found. The first half saw Guiseley passing as well as they have this season, particularly down the left with Del and Shona linking, but thwarted by solid defending and fantastic goalkeeping, with Garforth hitting us on the break helped by a strong wind.
An even first half ended with a fine goal for Garforth on 27 minutes after some poor defending from the Blues. It could have been 2 but for a great save from Georgia and then Guiseley broke with Liv’s shot saved and Katie just missing with the follow up.
What would John Brady say at half time, the first time in 2 years that we had conceded the first goal in a match. As Brian Clough would have urged his players, he told them to keep passing and a goal would come.
Twenty three minutes later and after a determined bombardment of the Garforth goal we had still not breached their defences with their keeper continuing her heroics and some excellent headed clearances from Sian’s throws. Trish was making arrangements to safeguard the cat when the Brady’s got home. But for a bit of luck when Garforth hit the post the Blues could have been 2-0 down.
But then Del stepped up with a cool head and with the entire Garforth side waiting for another long throw, she took a short one to Sian who hit a powerful shot from outside the area which the keeper could only parry to Ellen who stuck it firmly in the back of the net. 1-1 and Trish started to relax a tiny bit.
Guiseley continued the blitz of the Garforth goal – Shona blasting over on 24. On 27 another corner was swung in but it was only cleared to Sian who pulled the trigger from well outside the box and thumped it past the goalie and into the back of the net. A huge moment – only 3 minutes left for another 100% league season.
On 29 a throw deep in the Guiseley half saw Garforth determined to get back on level terms, but a clearance and wonderful run by Del, with an unselfish through ball to Ellen saw a third goal for the Blues and confirmation of their 100% league record. The Brady’s cat lives to fight another day and the girls go on to the Cup Final in two weeks looking for another double.
