Stanningley Black 1 – 3 Guiseley Yellow

Stanningley Black 1 – 3 Guiseley Yellow

First game of the new season and with new players fitting in we were wondering how the boys would start. Very well it seems.

Guiseley started off brightly, winning the ball and creating the chances and on 10 mins Ethan latched onto a loose ball and opened the scoring for the Yellows.

Straight from the kick off Guiseley went up the pitch and Jamie doubled the scoring making it  2-0.

Declan broke free and was through on goal but his shot hit the crossbar, and there were shouts of encouragement from the rest of the team which is exactly what we want from this group of players, working hard together as a team.

So at half time we knew it could be hard work in the second as we were kicking up hill. the boys were advised to try and keep it tight and catch them on the break. A great first half though with the team working hard, especially the back four and Declan and Jamie up front.

The third goal was a result of listening to Bill and myself and going out there and doing it.

Luke to Robert to Fred to Alex to Declan ….GOAL. (I think that’s how it went, just asked Declan)!

Each player looking up and placing the pass to the next and a nice left foot shot from Declan. This is the football that we know you can play, all of you.

Stanninley are no  pushover though and got a goal back on 59 mins but the boys held on for the win.

The whole team did very well, it was hot out there and first game back so fitness isn’t quite there yet but some of the team were fantastic today.

Luke in goal saved us on more than one occasion when they got through the defence. His positional play was excellent. I thought the back four were terrific, Robert and Matthew driving out of defence and at players was a joy to watch. Arjan’s clearance header from what I thought was a certain goal. Sam’s first time clearances and tackling and Jake’s heading was noted and appreciated. Declan and Jamie’s endless running was great.

I thought the new boys, Ronan, Leon and James did well. It’s hard work out there and I noted that James had picked up on an earlier position I asked him to go in on a corner. Little things like that can help in a big way, when you are part of a team.

It was a good TEAM performance today so well done to ALL the players, thank you, I appreciate the hard work put in today.

Thank you to Carl for running the line, we all know how badly Jo wants to do it so lets give her a chance eh? stop being greedy guys!

Thanks to Bill, great as ever and thanks to Stanningley players, coach and Manager, great game.

Could I please ask parents not to shout positional advice to other players on the team. Bill and I will be responsible for positions and sometimes we ask them to do a job for us,like being in a certain position on the field,  just don’t want the boys to be confused who to listen to. Thanks guys, I know it’s hard and we all know who has the loudest voice, me (sorry)!

Jake took a bad knock to his knee toady, we all hope he’s okay and with us next week. You did very well today Jake.

Well done lads. A really good result against much improved Stanningley team.

A very promising start to the season.

Luke put in a commanding performance in goal and the defence all morning inspired confidence and never really allowed Stanningley an opportunity until Guiseley tired a little on the tough slope in the second half.

Sam, Arjan, Matthew and Robert were in terrific form today with many assured clearances that allowed the defence and midfield to reset themselves where Stanningley might have caused problems.

Tom and Fred and their psychic connection worked well in midfield and Ethan scoring the first of the season was a result of very determined attacking from Tom, Declan, Ethan and James.

Declan’s goal (Guiseley’s third) was a terrific team effort with fast, precise passing from defence to attack and Declan very coolly slotted the ball above and beyond the keeper to give Guiseley some breathing space.

Today was a tough game, and yet when Guiseley clicked, Stanningley sometimes struggled to contain them. With improved fitness and a more patient and structured midfield there can be more good times ahead this season.

A real disappointment today was the state of the pitch due to dog mess, something recognised on the sidelines and sadly on the pitch during the game. It’s something that Guiseley also have problems with on the Rawdon pitches. This is something that could be firstly fixed by dog owners being more responsible, but a walk of the pitch before the game by parents with poo bags would really help ensure something similar doesn’t happen again.
