A fine late summer morning for our first league encounter of the season. A large pitch, the distant roar o the M62 and the smell of bacon sandwiches set the scene. We started aggressively and within 2 minutes Tom drew a fine save from their excellent keeper. The ball came to Ryan who crossed in for Benn to slot our first goal. 0-1. They then came back and in the fifth minute scored from a free kick. 1-1. They kept the pressure on and Luke was busy for the next ten minutes making some good saves – Ryan heading the ball off the line at one point. It was even Stevens and we settled into our rhythm – Mark clearing up at the back, Benn and Rory passing through and Tom and Callum stalking their penalty area. Harry Sandham got some great tackles in as we tried various means to beat their use of the offside rule. Eventually a Henry ball round their defence gave Tom the little he needs to score and he did – rounding their keeper and passing it into the net.1-2. In the second half they continued coming out leaving us offside. Their excellent number 7 nipped through, rounding Luke to make it 2-2 in the 5th minute. He very nearly got another minutes later – putting it just past the post. In the 11th minute Benn cleared off our line – it was tense stuff as they pushed forward. Marc and Harry Griffin kept them at bay. Harry Wade probed and Rory poked through hoping to beat the offside trap. Then in the 12th Henry burst through their right wing and hit the underside of the bar. We were caught offside several times as Sam tried to release the forwards with some incisive passes. We got the ball into their area and their goalie made two great saves before Lucas sent in a precision shot from just outside the area – 2-3 – a fine goal and deserved reward for Lucas who worked hard the whole game. They came back looking for an equaliser. Harry Sandham put in some great runs down the wing and Ryan kept the ball from them before going off with injury. There had been some informed debate on the sidelines regarding the offside rule. In the 29th minute Henry passed to Tom who had swung out wide – Tom then flashed along their defensive line and guided the ball past their oncoming keeper. No debate required – just pure class. 2-4. The game ended in the 33rd minute with Luke saving a penalty – capping a great performance from our Goalie and a well deserved man of the match.
