It was first versus second last Sunday as we entertained a Sutton team who had gone into the game with a 100% record.
The boys knew they were in for stern test against the league leaders, but they had the carrot of knowing a win would see them leapfrog the visitors and maintain their own unbeaten start to the season.
For the first time this season we started the game well and got the ball wide to Joseph and Taylor who whipped in some good crosses in the first 10 minutes, and that pressure told as Taylor’s cross found Charlie at the back post who tucked his shot away into the bottom corner. We continued to apply pressure on the Sutton defence and were unlucky not to add a second before Sutton came right back into the game and were maybe unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when it appeared the Sutton striker was being impeded when clear through on Fin in goal.
Fin had to be called again as Sutton began applying further pressure on the defence of Oliver an James. But shortly before half time Joseph broke away and fed Taylor on the left who drilled in a low shot into the bottom corner of the net and gave us some breathing space going into half time.
The second half was much the same as the first with both sides creating chances, but some 10 minutes into the second half James scrambled in our 3rd after Oliver had hit the post, but fair play to Sutton they kept plugging away and never gave in despite us dominating possession for the majority of the half. I think its fair to say that we should have tucked away a few more but for a combination of our poor finishing and a good opposing keeper. Sutton themselves had their chances to reduce the deficit, but Fin was on top form today and pushed a rocket onto the top of the bar which looked destined to drop into the path of a Sutton forward but Fin was straight up and smothered the ball at he feet of the Sutton striker, a fantastic double save.
The final whistle went and the boys had come out on top against a strong Sutton side who will no doubt be in the mix at the end of the season. The boys put in a massive collective effort today and it was pleasing that we came away with 3 points but also a clean sheet.
Yet again it was another close one for MOM but the supporters votes could not divide Fin who was superb in goal and Taylor who was a constant menace to the Sutton defence. Well done to both of them, and all the boys involved today.
