Guiseley Yellow 3 – 1 Stanningley Albion Black

Guiseley Yellow 3 – 1 Stanningley Albion Black

A lovely day for football today, nice weather, and the pitch was looking good.

Guiseley had most of the play throughout the whole game, and the scoreline was only kept low due to the excellent goalkeeping fron Stanningley.

It was going to take something special to opening the scoring and on 12 minutes, Declan picked up the ball on his left foot, with his back to goal, turning and firing a wonderful strike off his right foot beating the keeper from some distance, really special goal. You were excellent today Declan, playing different positions easily, and you could have had 5 or 6 goals yourself. Very proud.

It was all Guiseley, but the keeper held firm until Jamie’s hard work paid off and he doubled Guisleley’s score on 30 minutes. A great finish, and I thought you were excellent throughout today Jamie, a real asset to the team, always, always working. Thank you.

Stanningley started the second half strong, but Guiseley soon took over and started raining shots in from all over, Robert firing from outside the box and Declan shooting from near the half way line were two memorable efforts, Guiseley must have had over 20 shots on target.

Stanningley had their share off the shots, only for Luke (Peter Schmeichel) to be on form and deal with everything, even diving low and getting a kick in the face, accidental, from the opposition. Fantastic today Luke, great saves, bravery…. you really have come on strong this season, wonderful keeper.

Finlay wrapped up the points on 30 minutes with a cool finish, but unfortunately we gave away a free kick and after a bit of ping pong in the box, Stanningley scrambled the ball home, making the final score 3-1.

It was a great team performance today, I’m really proud of you, you played some lovely football, raining shots from all over. The work rate of all of you today was terriffic, that’s all I can ask for, and today was one of those days when only excellent goalkeeping stopped you getting double figures.

All of you had good moments today.

Luke, great performance today, brave, technically very good, improving all the time.

Fred, you did a job for us, distribution is is the key when you are in that position, you fought hard and worked very hard.

Matthew, strong as ever, striding forward and making it look simple. Class.

Alex, great vision, good passing and support role, and making it look easy.

Josh, I thought you were great! You always listen and know what Bill and I have asked, great strength sheilding the ball.

Jake, again, you know the left side and what to do when you have the ball, and playing up front and having shots today!

Robert, strong and gutsy performance in the midfield today.Great free kicks and corners, great shot too.

Finlay, good effort today, nice passing play and nice finish when pushed up front.

Tom, Thought you deserved a goal today, nice passing play with Declan, Sam J and Finlay. Well done.

Declan, Fantastic today, I know I give you a the hardest time out of all the players, for obvious reasons, but today you were outstanding for me. That goal was very special, you could have had 5 or 6, and you did a great, cool job at the back. Brilliant.

Sam J, Great passing, you are such an unselfish player, a great quality to have. You deserved a goal today too.

Jamie, Well i know you got a goal, but I think the workrate you put in today, you deserved another too. You are another player who is very unselfish, always willing to give the ball, and you give 100%.

So, a nice win today, I thought Stanningley were very good throughout, always respectful and kept going. Credit to them and to their coach and manager David.

A great performance today, with some lovely passing, great saves and distribution of the ball, and treated to 3 goals.

Team: Luke S, Fred, Matthew, Alex, Josh, Jake, Robert, Finlay, Tom, Declan, Sam J, Jamie.

    View from the North Stand

After last weekend’s disappointing result against Amaranth, Mark asked for an improvement akin to the performances provided in training on Friday nights.

And every single member of the team gave him that yesterday.

From the beginning, it was clear that Guiseley wanted this.

The pressure was relentless from Guiseley. Any opportunity for Stanningley was well controlled by the defence and the midfield and forwards kept the ball in Stanningley’s half almost constantly.

Tom and Robert provided some excellent corners which were unfortunately not met by Guiseley heads, but the half time score reflected Guiseley’s control as Declan and Jamie both scored excellent goals, finding space in a very tight Stanningley defence.

The second half was much more of a midfield battle with Luke awesome in goal, and as Mark says, incredibly brave to dive for an effort that saw him catch an accidental boot in the face.

His marshalling of the defence was terrific all morning, and his Man of the Match performance was well deserved.

At the other end Sam and Finlay had plenty of chances but again the Stanningley defence marshalled well.

Finlay was unlucky not to score midway through the second half when a terrific cross from Tom completely baffled Stanningley and the ball fell to Finlay’s feet only for a pirouette, that would have won him a ten on Strictly, resulted in the ball rolling past and out of play.

Finlay’s confidence is so much stronger now though, and his effort was well rewarded with a one on one with the goalkeeper that saw Fin roll the ball into the back of the goal.

Only a late freekick for Stanningley that saw the ball hit the back of the Guiseley net from close range after a mix up in the six yard box took the edge of a totally dominant performance.

Midfield and defence were so much stronger together and gave each of the players so many more options. This control gave the forward so much more to work from, and there could have been so many more goals with these options.

Good luck to Stanningley in 2013. Their performance showed their current league place is undeserved, but Guiseley today were terrific.

Finally, many thanks to Jo for the half-time coffees every week, and to Debbie for the extra special mince pies this week.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Mark, Bill, all the boys and their families.
