The first tournament of the year and Guiseley Blues dominated their group and scored more goals than the rest of the group could manage collectively. The teams encountered by the Blues, including Burley, two Horsforth teams, Baildon and Ilkley, were no slouches and had some very good games between themselves, but just couldn’t face up to the well disciplined and skillful Blues. The boys secured a fantastic result for each of their five matches.
The only team to score against Guiseley was Horsforth St Margarets who netted three before half time when Ian, under some pressure from the boys, mixed up the tried and tested formation. The second half saw a return to standard formation and a polished performance by the Blues to secure the win.
The haul of nearly 30 goals were scored by James, Charlie, Samuel, Sam, Harry and new sensation Marley. Both Ben and Mason were under the weather at the tournament; otherwise they would have got their names on the score sheet also.
Equally impressive were the 4 clean sheets and only 3 goals scored against the Blues. Testament to the strong defending and excellent keepers (Ben, Charlie and Samuel) who weren’t tested often, but made some good saves when needed.
The biggest difference between the Blues and the other teams was the quality of the team play, passing and positional play.
Player of the tournament went to James whose solid and strong performance allowed the team to push forward and score goals. James’ performance was crowned by scoring 7 goals (including 2 of his signature goals using the opposition defenders to deflect into the net), which for a defender is no bad feat either.
Well done to the boys for providing the supporters with an entertaining morning (and afternoon). Everybody is so proud of how well the team has developed over the year.
It was very fortunate for the Blues that Ian and Craig turned down the Manchester job this week and decided to continue coaching the Blues.
